  • On Feynman Propagators

    The Klein-Gordon equation has several natural Green's functions, often called propagators. The most well-known propagators are probably the forwards (retarded) propagator and the backward (advanced) propagator, which are important in the Cauchy problem of the classical theory. In quantum field theory one needs to consider also other propagators, in particular the Feynman propagator and the "positive frequency" bisolution. On static spacetimes, the Feynman propagator has a clear definition and can be obtained via various methods, which will be described in this talk. On non-static spacetimes the construction of propagators is more complicated. I will show an approach based on non-autonomous evolution equations. However, in this non-static case, no obvious distinguished Feynman propagator exists. I will discuss some possible generalizations of the methods from the static case, which are related to a curious open problem concerning the self-adjointness of the Klein-Gordon operator.
